Anjeer for constipation: what the fibre does and how to eat it

What a clinical trial found, how much fibre dried figs really contain, and a simple routine to try.

Anjeer for constipation: what the fibre does and how to eat it

Anjeer can help with mild constipation because dried figs are rich in fibre: 100 g contains about 9.8 g of dietary fibre (USDA), and a clinical trial found fig paste improved how quickly food moved through the colon. It works best as part of a routine with enough water, and it is not a treatment for constipation that is severe or new.

Why dried figs help

Fibre adds bulk and holds water in the stool, making it softer and easier to pass. Dried figs are among the most fibre-dense dry fruits, and three Jumbo anjeer (about 60–70 g) give you roughly 6 g of fibre. Figs also contain natural sugars and small seeds, which may add to the effect, though the fibre does most of the work.

What the research found

In a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2016, 80 adults with functional constipation took either fig paste or a placebo every day for 8 weeks (PubMed). The fig group showed:

  • significantly faster colon transit time
  • better stool consistency
  • less abdominal discomfort

Two honest caveats. The trial did not find a significant change in how often people went to the toilet, and the participants took a large daily amount of fig paste, far more than a few dried figs. So the evidence supports figs as a helpful food, not as a laxative.

How many anjeer to eat for constipation

Start with 2 soaked anjeer a day for a week, then move to 3 if your stomach is comfortable. Jumping straight to a large amount of fibre often causes gas and bloating. Our guide to how many anjeer to eat per day explains how the amount changes for children and for people watching their weight or sugar.

A simple 2-week routine

  1. Night: rinse 2–3 anjeer and soak them in half a cup of drinking water (how to soak anjeer properly).
  2. Morning: eat the figs before or with breakfast and drink the soaking water.
  3. Through the day: drink plenty of water; fibre without fluid can make constipation worse.
  4. Daily: add some movement, even a 20-minute walk after meals.
  5. After 2 weeks: if nothing has changed, speak to a doctor rather than eating more figs.

Soaked or dry: which is better?

The fibre content is broadly the same. Soaked anjeer are softer and easier to chew and many people find them gentler on the stomach, which is why soaking is the traditional choice for constipation. Anjeer simmered in warm milk at night is another option, though milk does not suit everyone.

When to see a doctor

Food helps mild, everyday constipation. See a doctor promptly if you have blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, severe abdominal pain, constipation alternating with diarrhoea, or a change in bowel habits that lasts more than three weeks. Children, pregnant women and older adults with new constipation should also be checked rather than self-treated.

For a daily habit, Jumbo Anjeer 500 g lasts one person about 9–11 days at 2–3 a day, and the 1 kg pack about two and a half weeks. More on fibre, calcium and potassium in anjeer benefits.
