Diwali dry fruit gift boxes: 7 things to check before you buy

Freshness, grading, packaging, price per 100 g and delivery dates: how to choose a dry fruit gift that actually gets eaten.

Diwali dry fruit gift boxes: 7 things to check before you buy

A good Diwali dry fruit box is fresh, honestly filled and arrives before the festival; a bad one is mostly raisins in a heavy box. Diwali falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026, so most gifts need to be ordered by the first days of November. Here are the seven checks worth doing before you pay.

1. Is there a pack date, not just a best-before?

Dry fruits do not spoil quickly, but they do dry out and lose flavour. A best-before date 12 months away tells you little; a pack date tells you how long the fruit has been sitting. For a gift, look for something packed within the last 2–3 months. If the seller cannot tell you, assume old stock.

2. What is actually inside, by weight?

Many boxes advertise "500 g of premium dry fruits" and fill half of it with raisins or dates, the cheapest items. Ask for the weight of each item. A box built around one premium dry fruit, such as large soft anjeer, often feels more generous than a mixed box of the same price.

3. Are the dry fruits graded by size?

Size is where quality shows. Large, even anjeer, almonds or cashews cost more and look better when the box is opened. Mixed sizes usually mean the seller is blending grades. For figs, we grade by diameter: Medium 28–32 mm, Jumbo 33–38 mm and Royal 39 mm and above. A gift box should hold the top grade.

4. Untreated or sulphured?

Bright, uniformly pale dried fruit has often been treated with sulphur dioxide to hold its colour. It is permitted, but many families prefer untreated fruit, and the label should say so. Our guide to buying good anjeer shows how to tell the difference by colour, smell and the natural white sugar bloom.

5. Packaging that keeps the fruit soft

A beautiful wooden or metal box is useless if the fruit inside is loose and exposed to air. Look for sealed, food-grade inner packs inside the presentation box. Dried figs in particular harden when they lose moisture, and a hard fig is a disappointing gift.

6. Compare price per 100 g, not price per box

Gift boxes hide their real price behind packaging. Divide the price by the net weight of fruit to compare fairly.

BoxPriceNet fruitPrice per 100 g
Mixed box, 4 compartments₹1,299400 g₹325
Premium mixed box₹2,499600 g₹417
Single-fruit box (Royal anjeer)₹1,499500 g₹300

The first two rows are illustrative examples, not quotes from a specific brand; run the same sum on any box you are considering. Dry fruit prices are higher this festive season: an October 2026 trade report found anjeer up 5–15% on last Diwali and almonds up 20–40% (FreshPlaza), so comparing per 100 g matters more than usual.

7. A proper GST invoice and a delivery date you can trust

Dried figs and most dry fruits now carry 5% GST, down from 12% after the September 2025 rate revision (ClearTax). A seller who can issue a GST invoice is usually a registered, accountable business. Ask when the order ships and how long delivery takes to the recipient's pincode, and add two days of margin.

A simple Diwali ordering timeline

  1. By 25 October: decide the list and budget; place bulk or corporate orders (see our corporate gifting checklist).
  2. By 1 November: place personal gift orders for delivery across India.
  3. 3–5 November: orders for nearby cities and same-state delivery.
  4. After 5 November: only local pickup or express options are safe.

Why anjeer makes a good Diwali gift

Dried figs feel indulgent but are not a sweet: they are fruit with nothing added, rich in fibre, calcium and potassium (USDA). They also suit guests who are cutting back on mithai. See what anjeer is good for if the recipient asks.

Our Royal Gift Box holds 500 g of our largest grade in a rigid ribbon box, with origin and pack date printed inside. For 25 boxes or more, with your branding and a note per recipient, ask for a corporate quote.
