Anjeer for kids: from what age, how much and how to serve it

Children can enjoy anjeer from the time they start solid food, as long as it is prepared for their age. For babies, that means soaked and mashed or blended, never whole. From about age four, most children can eat chopped figs, and older children can eat them like adults. Portions are small: half a fig to two figs a day depending on age.

Babies under 1: soaked, mashed, never whole

The NHS advises: do not give whole raisins or dried fruits to babies under 1, and always cut them into small pieces (NHS Start for Life). Dried figs are chewy and can block a small airway. Once your baby has started solid foods:

  1. Soak one fig in warm water for 2–3 hours until very soft.
  2. Remove the stem tip and blend or mash it smoothly.
  3. Stir a spoonful into porridge, ragi, mashed banana or curd.

Start with a small amount a few times a week and watch for any tummy upset, as with any new food.

How much anjeer by age

This is a practical guide, not a medical rule. Your paediatrician may suggest different amounts for your child.

Choking safety

  • Children should sit down while eating, never run or lie down with food.
  • Always supervise young children while they eat.
  • Chop figs into small pieces for under-fours, even if they insist they can manage.

Teeth: serve figs with meals

Dried fruit is sticky and sugary. The NHS suggests eating dried fruit with a meal rather than as a snack between meals, to lower the risk of tooth decay (NHS). Make it part of breakfast or dessert, and remember brushing twice a day.

What anjeer gives a growing child

Figs bring fibre (helpful for the constipation many children get), plus calcium and potassium (USDA). Children aged 4–8 need about 10 mg of iron a day (NIH); one fig gives about 0.4 mg, so it is a small helper, best eaten with vitamin C foods such as orange, guava or tomato.

Easy ways to serve anjeer to kids

  • Anjeer milkshake: blend 2 soaked figs with cold milk and half a banana.
  • Fig porridge: blended fig stirred into oats, dalia or ragi instead of sugar.
  • Anjeer curd: finely chopped figs mixed into plain curd.
  • Sugar-free ladoo: figs and nuts ground together; recipe in our anjeer recipes (grind nuts very fine for young children).
  • Lunchbox: one chopped fig with a few almonds for school-age children.

Soft, even-sized figs are easier for children to chew. Our Jumbo anjeer 250 g is a good size to start with, and see how many anjeer a day for the whole family.
